Wild Slovenia by Gravel Bike

Two gravel cyclists riding side by side along a valley road in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps

What to Expect

This 7 night, 6 day tour is designed for passionate cyclists who love variety, raw nature, and a fulfilling but relaxed physical challenge. This is gravel touring at its finest, not extreme racing. Our focus is on absorbing the breathtaking scenery, sharing great conversations with fellow riders, and enjoying the journey.

Gravel Cycling in Slovenia’s High Peaks: The Kamnik-Savinja Alps

Looking for dramatic gravel riding? Prepare for sustained, rewarding climbs that test your legs, leading to high-altitude mountain pastures where traditional wooden alpine huts serve hearty local food. The descents are fast, sweeping, and exhilarating, framed by towering, jagged limestone peaks that reach over 2,500 metres into the sky.

Kočevsko Forest: The Ultimate Off-the-Grid Gravel Adventure

For gravel cyclists who crave raw, uninterrupted terrain, the Kočevsko forest is the ultimate playground. This vast wilderness features hundreds of kilometres of pristine fire roads, double-tracks, and remote gravel paths carving through ancient woodlands.

The Kolpa River: Scenic Valley Riding & The Perfect Basecamp

Descending from the deep forest brings you to the stunning Kolpa River valley, offering a completely different gravel experience. Follow the winding riverbanks along scenic, hard-packed gravel paths that track the border, offering flat to rolling terrain with breath-taking views of the emerald water and dramatic limestone cliffs.

Gravel Cycling in Slovenia’s Subterranean Wonder: The Karst Area

Riding here feels like exploring a living open-air museum. Smooth, hard-packed gravel forestry roads lead you over hidden subterranean cave systems and past peaceful meadows where native white Lipizzaner horses roam. It is the perfect blend of fast, rolling kilometres, mind-bending natural geology, and deep-rooted cultural history.

Culinary Highlights: Traditional Slovenian Lunches

Each day features a carefully selected, authentic lunch spot. You will get to refuel and relax with traditional, hearty Slovenian food, from comforting alpine stews and local cheeses in mountain pastures to traditional dishes made from fresh, regional ingredients. These mid-ride stops are the perfect opportunity to rest your legs, soak in the local culture, and enjoy the company.

Fitness & Difficulty: Level 3 (Intermediate)

On a scale of 1 to 5, this tour rates as a solid Level 3. It is ideal for fit cyclists who are comfortable spending consecutive days in the saddle and handling steady backcountry climbing.

  • Average Daily Distance: Most days range between 50 to 70 km.
  • Average Daily Elevation: Expect roughly 1,000m of climbing per day.
  • The Variations: To give you a complete riding experience, the itinerary includes a challenging wilderness endurance stage pushing 80 to 100 km with 1,500m to 1,700m of elevation (Level 4), as well as a relaxed recovery ride along the river covering an easy 40 to 50 km (Level 2).

Terrain & Surface: Level 3 Technicality

The routes are meticulously designed to showcase the best of modern gravel riding. You do not need a mountain bike, but you should be confident handling changing, unpaved surfaces. The terrain is an engaging mix of:

  • Hard-packed, unpaved forestry roads and fire tracks.
  • Smooth, quiet tarmac sectors to seamlessly connect the wilderness zones.
  • Occasional light single-track and rugged double-track paths to keep the riding dynamic (never exceeding Level 3 technical difficulty).

Support & Safety: Fully Backed, Even Off-the-Grid

Your safety and comfort are our top priorities, allowing you to focus entirely on the ride.

  • Support Vehicle: A dedicated support van accompanies the tour to carry your luggage, handle mechanical issues, and provide fresh hydration and snacks at designated checkpoints.
  • Off-the-Grid Peace of Mind: In highly isolated areas like the deep Kočevsko forest—where mobile phone signals disappear—our team and support vehicle ensure you are never left stranded.
  • Protected Alpine Zones: To preserve Slovenia’s pristine environments, support cars are strictly restricted in certain high-altitude alpine areas (such as Velika Planina). On these pristine sectors, you will enjoy complete cycling solitude with the van on standby should it be required.
